How can we address rising homelessness and decaying social infrastructure simultaneously? Homelessness within our cities is a major issue, especially in urban metropolises with temperate climates like San Diego. Society, specifically within the field of architecture, has begun to respond with an emerging typology: transitional housing. Our project proposes a tweak of this concept by transforming the historical library into a community center that integrates with the transitional residential element. Our shed approach would produce a dynamic new addition to the city, capable of housing the temporarily disadvantaged with dignity, providing value to the local community, and fostering a long term presence by leveraging a coloured, perforated second-skin to extend the lifespan of the building and liberate its concrete structure with the ability to grow and evolve as societal needs dictate.
