The People’s Lot
The People’s Lot is an exciting opportunity to bring together various social groups - children, parents, activists, English speakers, Spanish speakers, students, faculty and more - in both its design and function. Already a space for gardening and food production, concerts and protests, classrooms and leisure, the existing privately owned public oriented space is a beacon for community activity. As a new mixed-use building rises next door, designed by local architecture Professor Hector Perez, The People’s Lot is looking to leverage design as a vehicle to amplify its existing civic objectives.
Step 1: Observe the existing spatial, civic, and social dynamics of The People’s Lot, as well as its relationship to the new mixed-use building next door.
Step 2: Speculate on how design can amplify existing civic objectives of The People’s Lot and present at the San Diego Open House Festival
Step 3: Talk with engaged community members at Open House Festival, have community organizers canvas the neighborhood to develop public interest in the project, and subsequently host several community charrettes, in English and Spanish, to collectively brainstorm on various strategic approaches for spatially transforming The People’s Lot.
