Division itself may be productive; as G.W. Leibniz stated there is “unity in variety.” Ubiquitous division which blocks any social interaction between groups, however, is almost always problematic. Where is the middle ground?
This proposal plays with the richest architectural symbol of division - the wall. Tweaking this primary typology, this project envisions a porous, inhabitable wall that occupies the border itself on the main road that connects Zagreb and Belgrade. The significance of the porous wall is powerful: yes we are divided as two different groups, but no, that does not preclude us from coming together. The wall doubles as a space for people to come together to hoop, but also as an architecture that strives to be seen from the automobile: the wall altruistically colonizes the road at the border so that any passage between the two countries shares a brief moment driving through the brightly coloured, open wall. It also serves as a bridge to cross the main road, and as a small canopy for the smaller, quirkier courts that are directly under it.
